Musings on the Craft of Writing

►Started Tapping the Keyboard

Happy to have set my brain on fire this weekend.  I have, after 9 weeks of planning a series (a septology), begun Draft One of book one.

This septology is an epic (I loathe how this word has been kidnapped by the equivalent of neo-valley-girls) dark medieval Fantasy series.  I’m hoping that my skills as an author have improved to the point where I can complete each book quickly.  This can happen if I’ve done my pre-drafting work correctly, because each scene that I’ll write has been (at least partially) ironed out before I am typing it.

~~ This is me in the Pre-Draft Stage~~

I believe that the structure of planning I outlined here will serve me well.  I’ve only written Chaps 0-1 (& part of 2), but I think that it has paid off, for I sat down knowing just what I needed to write.  I’ve wondered recently about the correlation between writer’s block and not planning your scenes.  Hard to say.

Well, brain’s still on fire.  Hope I dream about it tonight, but, far more likely, I will dream about something like grocery shopping.  It’s just not a fair world.

  1. This is great to hear, Daniel! And I agree with you on the source of writer’s block – a case of not having a proper reference to push out of those turbulent places.
    Enjoy the fire!

  2. I so badly want to dream about my novels at night too, but I never have. I think it would so, so awesome to meet my characters in a dream and see how they act. Some day.

  3. Best of luck with your writing. My Christmas is set aside for sitting and planning out properly my series of books. I sort of already have 1, most of 2 and a very rough draft of 3 written, but my biggest problem has been changing my mind about what to have happen where and with which characters, so I’m heading down the planning route as well because I always seem to be doing more editing and redrafting that actual writing.
If you’ve never read it, and because like me you write epic fantasy, I would recommend Terry Brooks autobiography. Even if you’re not a fan of his books you might find it interesting, because he advocates outlining and planning to such an extent that you can sit and just write what you need to write.
